SDHC

SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity, SD 2.0) is an extension of the SD standard which increases card's storage capacity up to 32 GB. SDHC cards share the same physical and electrical form factor as older (SD 1.x) cards, allowing SDHC-devices to support both newer SDHC cards and older SD-cards. To increase addressable storage, SDHC uses sector addressing instead of byte addressing in the previous SD standard. Byte addressing supported card capacities up to 4 GB, whereas sector addressing can theoretically support capacities up to 2 TB (2048 GB). The current standard limits the maximum capacity of an SDHC card to 32 GB (it is expected that the SDHC specification will be revised in the future to allow card capacities greater than 32 GB). SDHC cards will not work in devices designed to the older SD 1.x specification. The SDHC trademark is licensed to ensure compatibility.

 SD and SDHC compatibility issues

The SDHC specification was completed in June 2006, but by that time, non-standard high-capacity (>1GB) SD cards (based on the older 1.x specification) were already on the market. The two types of storage cards were not interchangeable, creating some confusion among customers. SD and SDHC cards and devices have these compatibility issues :

  • Devices that do not specifically support SDHC do not recognize SDHC memory cards. Some devices can support SDHC through a firmware upgrade.
  • SDHC devices are backward compatible with SD memory cards.
  • Some manufacturers have produced 4 GB SD cards that conform to neither the SD2.0/SDHC spec nor existing SD devices.
  • File System: SD cards are typically formatted with the FAT16 file system, while SDHC cards are typically formatted as FAT32. However, both types of cards can support other general-purpose file systems, such as UFS2, ext2 or the proprietary exFAT for example.
  • Microsoft Windows may need a hotfix to support accessing SDHC cards

SD High-Capacity Cards

Faster Storage, More Capacity, Greater Flexibility

The SD High-Capacity (SDHC) card provides more removable storage power than ever before. With a capacity range starting at 4GB and going up to 32GB, developers have the choice to specify three data-writing speeds at guaranteed minimum data transfer rates.

The SD Association has established a new specification rating for the minimum data transfer for standard and high-capacity cards, as well as both types of host products. With the new Speed Class specifications, the host product can check the fragmented state in the card and calculate the write speed in each part of the card. The host can then determine where to write the data according to its speed requirement. The three SDHC speed classes - Class 2, Class 4 and Class 6 - transfer data at least 2, 4 and 6MB per second.

The SDHC card, already a market leader in the digital camera marketplace, preserves photographic integrity and raises the memory performance bar by guaranteeing minimum — more important than maximum — performance rates. This large capacity is essential for use with a variety of digital content types — especially with high-quality video.

In addition, many photo printers, card readers, video cameras and other devices are also equipped for SDHC guaranteed transfer rates, demonstrating the trend toward SDHC memory card leadership.

SDHC-enabled products accommodate SDHC memory cards and are backward compatible with SD memory cards. Data on SDHC cards is protected even if inserted in an incompatible device. SDHC cards also work in standard SD slots with a firmware upgrade.
